In November/December, 1994 of the "Plain Truth" magazine, Mr. John Halford wrote an article entitled, "The Challenge of Africa". In the article, Sister Mariola Mierzejewska, Superintendent of the Kasisi Orphanage in Zambia stated, "All I need is 12 Kwacha (about 2¢) and I can feed a child for a day".I started to wonder, "Do children (and adults) in America value a penny?" How many times have pennies been stepped over, thrown away and ignored? Not knowing that we walked over, thrown and ignored God, because those pennies (or coins) could have provided meals for homeless and starving children (Matthew 25:41-45). Because of Sister Mariola's comment, "The Children's Mite" was born. The word "mite" is Greek and means "a small piece of coin" which was considered to be of great value during its time. In today's society, it is looked on as being an insignificant and worthless amount of one's service. This is where the Children's Mite begins.
